The National Center for Information Technology (NCIT) is located in the University Politehnica of Bucharest and is run by the Computer Science and Engineering Department. The Center includes several research and teaching laboratories in the fields of High Performance Computing, Distributed Systems and Applications, E-Business and E-Government, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Networks. NCIT has 18 full professors and 34 teaching assistants, researchers and Ph.D. students. The Center's activity relies on a collaborative virtual environment using high-performance resources and computer-supported cooperative work tools. The solution is flexible, easily adaptable to different activities carried out by the Center, including project development, training, consultancy, technology transfer, etc. The mission of the Center is to promote advanced and inter-disciplinary research, to develop a new paradigm for intimate collaboration among computer scientists, computational scientists and researchers from a diversity of domains, to develop human resources by postgraduate educational programs (MSc, Ph.D., long-life learning) and a local "culture" in advanced Information Technology, and to offer local and remote access to a shared powerful computer infrastructure for the Romanian academic and industry communities.

The Center is actively involved in international cooperation with similar centers, partnerships with IT companies and development of national and international projects.

The Computer Science and Engineering Department of "Politehnica" University of Bucharest is one of the most active factors in establishing a national "technical and scientific culture" on the subjects related to distributed computing. We mention some of them here:

  • TEMPUS project DISCO (DIStributed COmputing) was developed with the participation of nine universities from Romania and nine universities from Western Europe.
  • The project CoLaborator built a collaborative laboratory for High Performance Computing, to support the development of a new paradigm for intimate collaboration among computer scientists, computational scientists and researchers from a diversity of domains, promoting the advanced and interdisciplinary research.
  • A number of projects are developed in a consortium formed by NCIT, CERN and Caltech. The result of the consortium collaboration is RoDiCA - Romanian Distributed Collaborative Architectures. The cooperation is supported by U.S. Department of Energy, National Science Foundation and the Government of Romania.
  • EU-NCIT - NCIT leading to EU IST excellency. This project aims to enhance the participation of the Center in European research in the following priority areas: GRID based systems for solving complex problems, Semantic based knowledge systems, eLearning, and Collaborative (mobile) working.
  • CODESTAR - Compact modeling of on-chip passive structures at high frequencies
  • REASON - REsearch and Training Action for System On a Chip DesigN
