The establishment of collaborative models for use of computing and data resources across various domains all over Europe and worldwide is currently being pursued through several eInfrastructure efforts. In this context, the SEE-GRID regional initiative has recently demonstrated that a geographically-independent, common-pool of computing resources can be of substantial scientific value to a widely distributed, less-resourced region like South-East Europe (SEE). Through the interconnection of the SEE regional infrastructure to the pan-European and worldwide eInfrastructures, the developing SEE sites can benefit from accessing computing power and advanced applications that would otherwise be unaffordable, and thus help make real the fundamental objective of minimizing the digital divide in SEE and ensuring equal opportunities for every citizen in the region.
SEE-GRID-2 aims to deliver an eInfrastructure to serve the research and educational needs of the scientific communities and end-users that will be sustainable both at national and regional level in its operation and expansion, will have a multi-disciplinary nature in encouraging and supporting grid applications among diverse technology domains, and will comprise of multiple geographically-distributed resource sites per SEE country thus engaging an equally-contributing collaborative group of research and academic groups per SEE country.
SEE-GRID-2 will further advance and integrate the existing Grid Infrastructure and services that have been created by its predecessor (SEE-GRID), will further strengthen scientific collaboration among the participating countries, and will ultimately achieve sustainability for national and regional eInfrastructures.
In the long-term, SEE-GRID-2 aspires to contribute to the regional cooperation and stability, in order to demonstrate the importance of collaborative efforts in science and technology areas like eInfrastructures, and help add one more element in the continuing EU efforts to ease the SEE digital divide and aid the integration of the region with the rest of the continent.
